Dean's Welcome

Angappa GunasekaranIt is my great pleasure to welcome you to the School of Business and Public Administration (BPA) at California State University, Bakersfield. We are in the heart of one of the top energy-producing and agricultural regions in the nation, which provides great opportunities for personal and professional advancement.

The School of Business and Public Administration at CSU Bakersfield is well-connected to a thriving economy in Kern County, which has a strong population of 800,000 and $32 billion economy. The leaders and professionals from local businesses and nonprofit organizations are closely partnered with BPA to provide experiential learning opportunities for students and a career-ready workforce to Kern County and beyond. The number of student-run clubs and organizations is a testimony to the engagement of students outside the classroom. The key performance measures of our success are the graduation rate and the number of students employed upon graduation by local, regional, national, and international organizations. BPA has an excellent ecosystem for developing student skills in innovation and entrepreneurship.

BPA at CSU Bakersfield has outstanding faculty and staff who are truly dedicated to student access and success by pursuing their lifelong passion for helping students become future ethical business leaders, and to engage in professional activities; including, research and consulting. The core mission of the School of Business and Public Administration is to provide a well-prepared workforce to Kern County, the Antelope Valley and the larger economy. The BPA faculty have PhDs from well-known universities both within the country and abroad, and they are not only committed to student learning, career development, and supporting local industries, but they are also known for their research around the globe. Also, we employ working professionals to teach classes, as they bring a wealth of real-life experience to the classroom. Our faculty and staff work closely with students to tailor their educational experience so they can successfully meet the challenges and opportunities that will arise as they enter the professional workforce.

BPA is proud to have faculty serving as the editors of journals, on the editorial board of journals, and on the scientific committees of conferences. Also, many of them have authored and edited books and serve on the advisory board of local organizations. We are well-connected with local Chambers of Commerce with the aim of supporting experiential learning and economic development opportunities. Our large community of 10,000 alumni and our Executive Advisory Council reflect a strong commitment to community engagement for student success and Kern's economic development.

BPA programs are comprehensive and designed to meet the needs of the local economy and beyond. For undergraduates, we offer six degree options, with a variety of concentrations within the BS Business Administration degree, the Economics degree, and the Public Policy and Administration degree. For graduate students, BPA offers a Master of Business Administration (MBA), a Master of Science in Health Care Administration (MS-HCA), and a Master of Public Administration (MPA).

The school’s BSBA and MBA degree programs are accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB) International. It is the gold standard for assuring high-quality education in business, economics, and public administration, and only 5% of the business schools around the globe are AACSB accredited. The MPA program is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Public Affairs and Administration (NASPAA). The School of Business and Public administration is the only school that offers AACSB- and NASPAA-accredited programs in the Southern San Joaquin and Antelope Valleys.

BPA is a great school, and is poised to become nationally and internationally known for its curriculum innovation, student-centered learning, high-quality research, internationalization, and economic development in Kern County.

You are welcome to explore BPA's website to learn more about the opportunities available, and we promise you a great and successful experience.
