BPA Professor presents at Faculty Speaker Series at the 2016 Research Excellence Day
Dr. Nyakundi Michieka presented “An Empirical Analysis of Oil Prices and Employment in Kern County” during the Faculty Speaker Series. Michieka assessed changes in employment in major oil producing states, following the recent decline in oil prices. Over the last 20 months, the West Texas Intermediate Spot price has dropped by 70 percent from $105.79 in June 2014 to $31.68 in January 2016. Reduced oil prices are often cited as a reason for reduced employment.
Dr. Nyakundi Michieka's area of expertise is environmental and natural resource economics, energy economics, regional economics and food security. He attained his Masters (2008) from East Stroudsburg University of Pennsylvania and his Ph. D (2013) from West Virginia University. With his research relevant to the issues facing the region, Michieka came to CSU Bakersfield for the opportunity to work with students from diverse backgrounds and teach courses that he enjoys.
